A Flowing Fable

Matthew Liu Fine ArtsAsia

Matthew Liu Fine Arts is pleased to present ‘A Flowing Fable’, Santi Moix’s first solo exhibition in Shanghai, China. Born in 1960 in Barcelona, Santi Moix moved to New York City in 1986 where he keeps residence. Eloquent in epic legends of the classics, Moix merges the Spanish painting tradition with modern art with a distinctive personal style. The exhibition gathers together the artworks of the artist’s recent projects, celebrating the fable of Moix underneath the flowing and liberating colors of his canvases. Throughout his artistic endeavors and physical migrations, Moix preserves the wilderness and imaginations that his native land bred into him. The root of his artistic inspirations is so strong and diverse that it is impossible to avoid comparisons with such luminaries as Francisco Goya (1746 - 1828), Mark Rothko (1903-1970), Odilon Redon (1840-1916), or audaciously with Australian aboriginals. Collage, the practice standardized by Pablo Picasso and George Braque is also widely used by Moix in his efforts to fully embrace modernism and contemporary life. As the New York based art critic Adrian Dannatt commented, “The liberating energy of the American city, its emphasis on independence, experimentation and risk taking is evident in the stages of creative evolution demonstrated by Moix, a sense of boundlessness, of limitless fecundity which is now in its very fullest bloom.” An artist of versatility, Moix’s oeuvre spans genres from oil painting to watercolors, from plaster sculptures to ceramic tiles, themed around the obscurities of personal experiences as well as legendary stories derived from epics and modern literature. A well-known artist recognized worldwide, Moix is represent by Pace and Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York. Moix’s works have been exhibited and collected at notable institutions such as the Centro Cultural Círculo de Lectores of Barcelona, Musée de l’hippodrome of Lille, Marimura Art Museum of Tokyo and Museo de Arte Moderna de Sao Paulo of San Paulo.
