1. Overview
Know This Artist is a free, non-commercial research and educational platform operated by What What Matters. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information when you use KnowThisArtist.com. We are committed to protecting your privacy and handling your data with transparency.
2. Information We Collect
We collect the following types of information:
- Account information: Email address and password (hashed) when you create an account.
- Profile information: Name and profile image, if provided when claiming an artist profile.
- Newsletter subscription: Email address if you subscribe to The Fair Report newsletter.
- Usage data: Pages visited, search queries, and interactions with the Service, collected via analytics tools.
3. Cookies and Tracking
We use cookies and similar technologies for analytics and advertising purposes:
- Google Analytics (GA4): Used to understand how visitors use the site — pages visited, session duration, and traffic sources. GA4 collects anonymized and aggregated data including device type, browser, approximate location (country/city level), and on-site behavior. This data is used solely to improve the Service.
- Meta Pixel: Used to measure the effectiveness of any promotional activity on Meta platforms (Facebook, Instagram). The Pixel may track whether you visited the site after seeing an ad, and may use cookies to build anonymized audience segments.
How to opt out: You may opt out of GA4 tracking by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. You may opt out of Meta ad tracking via your Facebook Ad Settings. You may also use your browser's built-in cookie controls or a tool such as optout.aboutads.info to manage tracking preferences across advertising networks.
4. Newsletter
If you subscribe to The Fair Report, we collect your email address for the purpose of sending you newsletter updates about art fairs and related topics. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of any newsletter email.
5. How We Use Your Information
- To provide and improve the Service
- To manage your account
- To send transactional emails (account confirmation, password reset)
- To send The Fair Report newsletter (only if subscribed)
- To analyze usage patterns and improve user experience
- To comply with legal obligations
6. Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal data. We share data only with the following third-party service providers as necessary to operate the Service:
- Supabase: Database and authentication infrastructure.
- Vercel: Hosting and content delivery.
- Google Analytics: Usage analytics.
- Meta: Advertising measurement via Meta Pixel.
Each of these providers has their own privacy policy governing their handling of data.
7. Artist Information
We display publicly available professional information about artists — including name, nationality, exhibition history, and gallery affiliations — for educational and research purposes. This information is sourced from publicly accessible APIs and open-access collections.
Artists may request correction or removal of their information by contacting us at jay@whywhatmatters.com or by using the profile claim feature on the platform. We will respond to valid requests within a reasonable timeframe.
8. Data Retention
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. If you delete your account, we will remove your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.
Analytics data (GA4, Meta Pixel) is retained according to the data retention settings of those platforms. Newsletter subscription records are retained until you unsubscribe.

- Right to access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Right to rectification: Request that inaccurate or incomplete data be corrected.
- Right to erasure: Request deletion of your personal data ("right to be forgotten").

- Right to data portability: Request your data in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format.
- Right to object: Object to our processing of your data where we rely on legitimate interests as our legal basis.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at jay@whywhatmatters.com. We will respond within 30 days. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
